I almost spent $2,780 on new outdoor furniture. I spent $189 instead.

The full story — the Harvey Norman quote, the 2-minute fix, and the honest “would I buy them again” bit.

White wicker outdoor lounge with mouldy, stained cushions on a suburban patio
Three weeks ago. Yes, really.

The couch

Two years ago I spent $2,400 on an outdoor lounge from Harvey Norman. Beautiful wicker, white cushions, the whole set.

We’d just moved into the house and the backyard was finally coming together. This was going to be where I had friends over for summer BBQs. Where my son and his cousins ran around on Christmas Day. Where I’d sit with my coffee in the mornings before anyone else was up.

I made my mum come over to see it the day it arrived.

Two years and two Melbourne winters later, I couldn’t look at it anymore.

This is a $2,400 couch. Two Melbourne winters in. No filter.

Mould across the cushions. Grass stains the kids left. Bird droppings I’d scrubbed off six separate times.

I’d stopped sitting out there with my coffee months ago. I’d basically given up on the whole patio.

And here’s the thing — I’d known it needed sorting for a while. But every time I started looking at new ones I’d see the prices and close the tab. We’re all feeling it right now. Groceries up. Interest rates up. Petrol up. Mortgage up a few hundred a month since the last RBA call. Spending another few thousand dollars now to replace furniture that technically still worked felt irresponsible — but I didn’t know what else to do.

The quote

Then my sister called and asked if she could do her baby shower in my backyard. Six weeks away.

That was my hand being forced. I rang Harvey Norman the next morning — half hoping I’d misremembered the prices, that there’d be a sale on, something.

They quoted me $2,780.

I actually said ‘are you joking?’ to the lady on the phone.

Nearly three grand. To replace a lounge I use four months a year. Because the cushions got dirty. That’s genuinely crazy when you say it out loud.

So I hung up, sat on the back step, and had a proper think.

The ad that stopped the scroll

That night I was scrolling in bed — you know the drill. Half-watching Netflix, half mindlessly flicking through Instagram. And of course, because I’d been Googling ‘outdoor lounge replacement’ an hour earlier, the algorithm served me up an ad.

Except it wasn’t what I expected. It wasn’t another lounge.

It was a woman pulling a stretchy cover over her couch. Before and after. So dramatic I watched it twice.

The price: $189.

I was fully expecting rubbish. I’d bought a thin Amazon cover years back and it slid off every time someone sat down. Mine lasted a week before it ended up in the bin.

But $189 vs $2,780? Even if it was useless I’d still be ahead.

I thought screw it, I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t, so I just ordered a set.

Putting them on

Three days later they arrived, and here’s the result.

Two minutes to do the whole set. I timed it because I was ready to be annoyed. I wasn’t.

Before: outdoor sofa with mouldy cushions and a yellow stain Before
After: the same outdoor sofa with fresh, clean fitted covers After
Before I ordered the covers, and two minutes after I put them on. No filter either way.

They go on like a fitted sheet — you just stretch them over the cushion. The elastic underneath holds everything tight so nothing moves.

My son walked out, took one look, and asked if we’d got a new couch.

I sat on it for an hour with a glass of wine just looking at it. It had been eighteen months since the patio looked like somewhere I actually wanted to be.

And the honest bit — because I know someone’s going to ask

This isn’t a forever fix. Eventually the couch underneath is going to need replacing — nothing lasts forever when it lives outdoors. But for now? I’ll definitely see out a few more summers before I have to think about it.

And the beauty of it is this — when they get dirty, I slip them off and chuck them in the washing machine. Easy. Cheap. Done.

Which, for the price of a nice dinner out, is more than enough for me.

Just in time for summer

My sister’s baby shower is coming up. And now I’m not embarrassed anymore.

The patio looks complete and inviting again. My son hasn't laid on that couch in a year.

A few more angles.

Scroll through — just so no one thinks I cherry-picked the shot.

Would I buy them again? Or do I regret it?

Absolutely. One of the best purchases I’ve made this year. Zero regrets — if anything, I wish I’d done it eighteen months ago instead of staring at that mouldy couch feeling sorry for myself.

Summer’s around the corner.
